Projects

I built my own computer over five years ago, and it has been, by far, the best investment I’ve made. Now that laptops are becoming the norm, I decided it was time to turn my computer into a server. It’s still a work in progress. What I’ve found is that there is no good online reference to walk me around through all of this, so this page is dedicated to my wishes and troubles.

Step 1: Get the software

I downloaded Ubuntu Server Edition and got rolling from there. This was by far the easiest part. You download the approximately 700MB ISO image and burn it onto a blank disc (I use ImgBurn). Then you stick the CD in your computer and make sure the computer boots from the CD.

WARNING Make sure you have a solid grasp of what components you have in your system. My computer has a 60GB hard drive (which is used primarily for the operating system) and a 500GB hard drive (which is used primarily for media). Even though the 500GB hard drive was the slave hard drive, the installer wanted to install the operating system on this drive, which would have erased everything!

Step 2: Give your server a static IP address

This is done with the interfaces file.
